4 months vacant position

The French partner of the DIOMED project fgranted by INTERRGIVB researches a young graduate student available in late 2011 / early 2012 for vacations of four months. . Attendances consist of a research activity at technician level in the team 3 from INSERM U1048 / I2MC.

The subject of the research deals with the treatment / prevention of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity with emphasis on the physiology of adipose tissue. The candidate will participate in investigations to be conducted, which are:

• Measurement of H2O2 production by molecules rom known chemical libraries (eg Prestwick) or new agents that may interact with SSAO and MAO, two different amine oxidases, abundant in fat cells.
• Transport of glucose with the same molecules on mouse adipocytes or human samples from the operative surgery of CHU Rangueil
• Measurement of lipolysis, lipogenesis in fat cells
• Chronic treatment with some of these molecules in cultured preadipocytes
• Chronic treatment with some of these molecules in diabetic mice, obese or not.

Vacations to DIOMED contributor are paid according to the official salary schedules of the french agency INSERM.
The geographic location of the work is: INSERM U1048, team 3, Bat L4, CHU Rangueil (I2MC) Toulouse, France.

XVII Portuguese National Biochemistry Congress, organized Portuguese Biochemistry Society, was held in the city of Porto, between December 15th-17th, 2010. DIOmed project partners from IBCM and BIOCANT (Portugal) attended this event and their presentations were done in posters:

"2nd DIOMED Consortium Meeting"

DIOMED consortium partners will be presenting the last results at the next DIOMED Consortium Meeting in Barcelona, Spain. This takes place on 5th of 0ctober, 2010 in the facilities of Barcelona Science Park (PCB). Under the leadership of Instituto de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (IRB Barcelona), representatives from the 6 partners will discuss the development on the activities and future actions of the different Work Packages presented by the specific WP leaders. Topics related to Dissemination, future meetings and Project Management will be also reviewed after the Technical Session. This meeting will also offer the opportunity to share ideas and network about future funding opportunities under FP7.  

"Fira de Recerca en Directe" organized by Obra Social de Caixa Catalunya and the Parc Científic de Barcelona , has been held in Barcelona (Spain) from 20th to 22nd of April, 2010.

The Fair was an exhibition about current research of which main objective was to contribute to encourage scientific culture among general public and let know about all current projects developed in Barcelona. Both researchers and public could interact during experimentations with lab instruments and IRB Barcelona had their own experimentation stand called: Could an existing drug be used to improve obesity and diabetes?

"4th Congress of the International Society of Nutrigenetics/Nutrigenomics - From reference intakes to personalized nutrition" organized by University of Pamplona and the ISSN , will be held in Pamplona (SPAIN) from 18th to 20th November 2010.

Christian Carpéné, INSERM (FR)  will attend as Commitee Member.

New results for type 2 diabetes, Antonio Zorzano

There may be hope for young adults suffering from type 2 diabetes, according to new research. Writing in the journal Diabetes Care, the researchers from Ireland, Spain and Italy investigated how new mechanisms in muscle cells may elucidate severe insulin resistance in the body, and showed a reduced response to aerobic exercise in young obese patients with type 2 diabetes. The study's results are part of the DIABESITY ('Novel molecular drug targets for obesity and type 2 diabetes') project, funded under the 'Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health' Thematic area of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) to the tune of EUR 11.6 million.  Obesity and diabetes are serious problems in the developed countries and considerable efforts are put in the development of drugs improving impaired carbohydrate metabolism. Semicarbazide sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) may be a possible target. The enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of primary amines. SSAO is highly expressed in adipocytes and in the vasculature. DIOMED Consortium Meeting, 20 November, 2009, Barcelona

In the first progress meeting, have been discussed scientific and technical aspects related to the progres of the project.

Discussions have mainly been focused on progress made on GT 2 - "Continous surveillance of needs and opportunities, GT 3 - "Development of technology tools to support the discovery, development and licensing of drugs for the treatment of diabetes and obesity" and GT 4 - "Identification of active compounds for the treatment of obesity and diabetes with the licensing potential". All the partners gave their inputs.

Next progress meeting will be scheduled within 6 months.
